Jimmy Tip: Be Curious, Not Impressive

Why Asking Better Questions Builds Stronger Relationships

We have all been there.

You walk into a networking event, shake a few hands and start the familiar conversation:

“So, what do you do?”

It is a perfectly good question. But after hearing it 15 times in one evening, it can start to feel a little like a job interview.

What if we approached networking differently?

Instead of walking into a room thinking, “How can I impress people?” try walking in thinking, “What can I learn?”

That small shift can completely change a conversation.

Because people do not necessarily remember the person who had the most impressive introduction. They remember the person who showed genuine interest in them.

Ask Better Questions

Curiosity is one of the most underrated relationship-building tools we have.

Instead of simply asking, “What do you do?” try:

“What do you enjoy most about what you do?”

Instead of, “How is business?” ask:

“What is the biggest opportunity you are seeing right now?”

Instead of, “How long have you been in business?” ask:

“What made you decide to start the business?”

See the difference?

The first questions gather information.

The better questions invite a story.

And stories create connection.

The goal is not to interrogate someone. It is to be genuinely interested. Listen to their answer, pick up on something they said and ask a thoughtful follow-up.

That is where the magic happens.

Your Personal Development Tip

Practice the two-question rule.

The next time you are having a conversation, ask two genuine follow-up questions before turning the conversation back to yourself.

Someone tells you they are expanding their business? Ask what prompted the expansion.

They tell you they just hired someone? Ask what they were looking for in that person.

They mention a challenge? Ask how they are approaching it.

You will become a better conversationalist simply by becoming a better listener.

And here is the bonus: you will probably learn something, too.

Your Business Development Tip

Turn curiosity into a customer strategy.

The best salespeople are not necessarily the ones with the slickest presentations. They are often the ones who ask the best questions.

Before talking about your product or service, find out what the other person actually needs.

What problem are they trying to solve?

What is frustrating them?

What would make their job easier?

What does success look like for them?

When you understand the problem, you can determine whether you actually have a solution.

That is not selling.

That is helping.

And people appreciate being helped a whole lot more than being sold.

The Jimmy Tip

Do not worry about being the most interesting person in the room. Be the most interested person in the room.

Your curiosity communicates something powerful:

You matter. Your story matters. I am interested in what you have to say.

That is how conversations become relationships—and relationships become opportunities.

Call to Action

At your next Chamber event, challenge yourself to ask three questions you have not asked before.

Put the phone away. Make eye contact. Listen to the answer. Ask a follow-up.

And do not worry about how impressive you sound.

Be curious.

You might walk away with fewer business cards—but a whole lot more meaningful connections.

And in business, that is a pretty good trade.

Cheers,

Jimmy
